My practice is informed by psychodynamic and humanistic psychologies. A significant part of what I do involves helping my clients reflect on the latent metaphors, images, and symbols that arise as a result of their psychological conflicts. As someone with a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with a strong focus on the pioneering work of Carl Jung, I am particularly sensitive to, and value, religious worldviews. Although I work with a wide variety of clients of both genders, in recent years I have focused increasingly on men and their specific needs, which I do not feel are being adequately met by current therapeutic practice.
I have also been working with trans-identified clients since 2021. My involvement in this issue came as a response to the lack of in-depth exploratory approaches for people struggling with their gender or gender identity. I have been developing my approach on this issue for several years now and I first spoke publicly about it on episode 79 of Gender: A Wider Lens, entitled "Gender Identity: Literally False, Metaphorically True" . My understanding of transgenderism as a broader social-cultural phenomenon that extends well beyond specifically personal, psychological issues has been greatly expanded through my work as co-host of the Beyond Gender podcast.
Over the last several years, political motives and assumptions have made a harmful incursion into the practice of psychotherapy, which is something that I have written about extensively in the books Cynical Therapies, and Woke: A Critique of Social Justic Ideology. This incursion has left many people feeling alienated and with nowhere to go. My practice is intended to give those people a place to speak freely and be listened to regardless of their politics.
